Based in Melbourne, Australia, The Edit Shop produces many different forms of video content including corporate videos and DVDs, television commercials, talent showreels and interactive Web and multimedia material.

“The realtime aspect of EDIUS is fantastic. Often I'll have six layers on the timeline, and I'll need to show the client how they all interact in realtime. On most systems, I'd have to render them and the client would have to wait half an hour for something to happen. Here I can show the client realtime previews and do adjustments and it's all there happening on the timeline, just as we look at it.

“Sometimes you are sitting there, when you've got a project, and you're just going on and on and on, and you're saying, ‘this is taking forever.' The beauty of realtime effects is that you can sit there and play more. You can say, ‘well how will this look or how will that look?' You're not hamstrung by time as much as you normally are.”

“On a recent job about Vietnam, the realtime filters in EDIUS gave me the ability to color correct different stocks of film together, to achieve a consistent overall look.”

Another EDIUS feature that Tony makes use of is the realtime aspect ratio conversion.

“At times, I get 4:3 footage for a 16:9 project. With the Video Properties, I can quickly and easily change the to the right format.”

One of the major features of EDIUS that initially attracted The Edit Shop's attention when looking for a suitable NLE system, was its ability to frame-accurately edit MPEG-2 clips in realtime.

“I recently had a project with the Australian Museum in Canberra, where we had four screens that had to run synchronously, all playing MPEG-2 files. Now unless they're all frame-accurate, over the day they're all going to go out of sync. The ability to export frame-accurate MPEG-2 from the timeline was invaluable.”

Tony also makes use of EDIUS's flexible user interface to suit his editing style.

“With EDIUS, I can remap the keyboard so that all my different programs are using the same keystrokes, with the same sort of functions. Also, I remapped the cut function onto the mouse, something that's usable quickly and easily.”

“The ability to be able to bring up a workspace is really cool. You might have a longform project that has heaps of footage, but not much happening on the timeline, so I can have just a small timeline and a big bin. Or on the other hand, I might have a television commercial that is effects-intensive but there's not that much footage – I can have a small bin and a very big timeline. Those two presets can just be clicked on easily.”
