The original EDIUS NX hardware consisted of a 64-bit PCI/PCI-X or x1 PCI Express main board, and a second optional 32-bit PCI board for the HD Expansion Kit.
EDIUS NX Express is designed for newer PCI Express-based motherboards and includes the x1 PCI Express EDIUS NX main board and an x1 PCI Express HD Expansion board in one convenient package.
The main PCI Express EDIUS NX board provides an exceptionally high-quality, realtime NLE system on which you can edit a mix of media including DV, HDV and a variety of other SD and HD formats.
The PCI Express Expansion board adds the capacity to output full quality, full frame rate HD video — in realtime — to an HD video monitor, making the HD editing process as fluid and reliable as editing DV in realtime, because you can preview your work in progress, as it is intended to be displayed. It also includes a standard definition MPEG-2/MPEG-4 encoder for high-speed standard definition rendering.
Software Differences: EDIUS NX Express includes Grass Valley EDIUS Pro NLE and Inscriber® TitleMotion™ Pro for EDIUS software. EDIUS NX with HD Expansion Kit additionally provides Ulead® DVD Workshop™ Express, Sony® Screenblast® ACID®.
In addition to support the high-speed, high-bandwidth PCI Express bus, EDIUS NX Express supports all the features available with DVStorm products, with powerful new functions and I/O capabilities:
- The EDIUS NX Express baseboard features hardware-based filtering and noise reduction technology, which cleans up analog video input to achieve the best possible quality.
- EDIUS NX Express can capture SD resolution video using the new Canopus Lossless codec, or as uncompressed video. Canopus Lossless is a true lossless compression codec — the compression ratio will depend on the original image detail and requires a fast CPU to process in realtime.
- The EDIUS NX Express FireWire port is OHCI-compliant, so you can use your PC as an ADVC for bidirectional analog/digital conversion.
- Although EDIUS Pro software supports native HDV editing regardless of hardware, EDIUS NX Express supports full HDV device control and capture.
- The HD component output provides high-quality, full resolution HD and SD video output, with technology that ensures that the audio output is perfectly synchronized with the video.
- The included MPEG encoder board supports SD MPEG-4 encoding in addition to MPEG-2 (StormEncoder).
Yes. EDIUS NX Express will support capture from and output to JVC and Canon HD devices via the IEEE 1394 interface. This includes full editing support for progressive video, including 24p and 24F.
EDIUS NX Express is responsible for processing video overlay to the PC monitor via DMA, and video and audio output to external monitors with realtime line scaling. Without hardware assistance, the burden placed upon the CPU to produce video overlay and perform line scaling increases significantly, reducing the overall realtime editing capabilities of the system. EDIUS NX Express relieves the CPU by generating the video overlay for onscreen preview, and converting the native 1440x1080i resolution of HDV to the full 1920x1080i resolution, for output to HD displays.
Also featured with EDIUS NX Express is the onboard DV codec, which produces a single DV stream for realtime DV output – a task that is handled by the CPU on generic OHCI-based editing systems. The hardware DV codec boosts realtime editing performance of DV-based projects.
The hardware-based standard definition MPEG-2/MPEG-4 encoder also provides accelerated SD MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 rendering from EDIUS and supported applications.

Some motherboards may exhibit one or more of the following issues, due to its chipset performance, connection between chipsets, memory structure or connection to graphics card:
- Data transfer performance between PCI Express bus and memory is insufficient
- DMA overlay may not be performed from PCI Express bus to the graphics card
- Access speed to memory may be slow
- Data transfer from the hard disk drive to main memory and concurrent motion performance of memory to the PCI Express bus may be insufficient
Such issues are a result of motherboard design and cannot be improved or corrected by driver software. To ensure problem-free operation, we recommend that you select a compatible/tested motherboard from the EDIUS NLE Systems Hardware Compatibility Chart.
View the EDIUS NLE Systems Hardware Compatibility Chart.
In addition to the recommended system requirements, please make sure that the components that you want to use satisfy the following conditions:
- CHIPSET: Supported chipset from the Hardware Compatibility Chart
- GRAPHICS CARD TYPE: PCI Express x16 (Recommended); AGP; 128MB (or more) video RAM
- AUDIO: Any audio device that has WDM support
- HARD DISK DRIVE (for OS/Applications): EIDE (ATA100) 80GB or larger, 5400rpm or faster
- HARD DISK DRIVE (for Video/Audio/Image data): S-ATA RAID connection* (Recommended)
*Although an onboard S-ATA RAID system can be used, please make sure that the onboard S-ATA device is independent of the EDIUS NX Express hardware. The HX-E2 (EDIUS NX main board) has to be independent of other devices as much as possible.
No. You will require the EDIUS NX PCI/PCI-X main board and the PCI EDIUS NX HD Expansion Kit. This version of EDIUS NX will still be available for a limited time. Please ask your Dealer or System Integrator for details.
Yes, the PCI Express specifications states that x4, x8 and x16 slots should be backward-compatible with x1 cards. However, x16 slots are often designed for graphics cards, so using an x16 slot may potentially cause problems on some motherboards.
There are two options:
- Capture in the native MPEG-2 TS format – this creates smaller files but requires a fast PC to edit the files in realtime
- Capture with the Canopus HQ codec (AVI) – this provides far greater realtime editing, even on slower PCs, but requires larger hard disk storage
There is no image quality difference when capturing to either file format.
EDIUS NX Express captures HDV footage in realtime, which is an advantage over competing HDV solutions that can take up to 7.5 times longer to capture HDV footage. There is no difference in time taken, if capturing as native HDV or with the Canopus HQ codec.
Yes. Footage being captured will also be output in realtime to an HD monitor via the component outputs.
There is no upgrade/crossgrade path for existing PCI/PCI-X based EDIUS NX hardware.
We are confident that you have been making good use of your current EDIUS NX hardware in your system. Changing from the PCI/PCI-X hardware to the PCI Express hardware would incur downtime and potentially require an entire new PC system, with no practical benefit.
The PCI/PCI-X versions of the EDIUS NX hardware are still available to system integrators and will still be available in the channel for a limited time. Please inquire with your Canopus/Grass Valley dealer.
The NX Bay, which brings the standard definition I/Os and FireWire port to a 5.25-inch bay, is available as an option. Please inquire with your Canopus/Grass Valley dealer.
The MPEG-2/MPEG-4 hardware encoder on the PCI Express Expansion board provides accelerated standard definition MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding from EDIUS and supported applications. As the encoder is standard definition only, it does not accelerate HDV encoding, nor does it support AVCHD. There is still considerable merit in using hardware-based SD MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding. The PCI Express Expansion board can have you producing DVD-ready and portable-ready content faster, often more than twice the speed of realtime in most cases.
