Success Stories
The demand for high-quality FireWire-to-SDI conversion technology found in the Canopus ADVC1000 is expected to increase in the immediate future. ADVC1000 success stories already include:

Broadcast — News
Broadcast News

Application: Broadcast — News
Customer: NHK (Japan Public Television), covering presidential election in Afghanistan

On October 9, 2004, the first Afghanistan presidential election took place since the state was established. The NHK news team prepared a live broadcast and transmission system using NHK's fly-away (satellite transmission system) in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The Asiasat3s satellite which operates using a 4Mbps bit rate was used. The news team used a Sony HDW-750 HD camcorder for news coverage and D1-SD SDI digital output (down converted out) was used for live broadcast and transmission.

When NHK uses SD facilities, the aspect ratio of video is squeezed horizontally to best maintain the original quality and when up-converting, the footage is horizontally stretched to minimize resolution deterioration. Digital material is preferred when using third-party materials (in PAL) or when using DV camera-recorded materials. Audio encoder (Tandgerg E5714) input settings modification becomes unnecessary with the availability of embedded audio, providing better operability overall.

The Canopus DV-SD SDI converter (ADVC1000) was used to convert PAL DV footage of the interview with President Karzai, provided by Afghanistan TV (RTA), into an SDI signal for transmission. Rough edits were performed using a notebook PC and transmitted. During the operation, the local news team covered a nighttime rocket attack on the American embassy. This recorded footage was also converted with the ADVC1000 and transmitted for news coverage.

The output from HDW-750 SD SDI was captured to notebook PCs for editing, and the result directly encoded using the ADVC1000. Even wide-aspect footage can be captured by using the ADVC1000's high quality DV wide mode.

When operating where the footage or leased-equipments is PAL, heavy format conversion equipment is usually required, which makes mobile editing difficult and limits transmission to only the most essential portions of the footage. The Canopus ADVC1000 makes it possible to capture footage with a laptop, perform mobile editing and output back to DV for direct transmission.
